This business is truly a Whyalla success story and one of foundation that shows old fashion hard work and resilience to be still a major score card in business.
Carlson and Sons were first founded by Alfred Sydney Carlson way back in 1942 with the sole purpose of supplying quality plumbing services to the wider Whyalla area. After his passing in 1959; the company wasn’t to be lost so his sons Harold and Roy stepped up and continued the family legacy.
Both Harold and Roy had experience working with the South Australian Housing Trust so with this knowledge they expanded the plumbing services to include renovations, maintenance, roofing, and rugged galvanised rainwater tanks that were regarded as a Whyalla necessity for every residence of yesteryear.
Both Harold and Roy decided to retire in 1974 so it was at this time that Harold’s sons Steve, Ron, Trevor, and Mark took over. Since then, they’ve continued the family success and have maintained the relationship with SAHT and their other dedicated customers. Carlson’s have delivered services as far as Roxby Downs, Woomera, Leigh Creek, and Australian Military bases. But all this time, it has been Whyalla that they’ve been grounded and dedicated to.
Currently Carlson and Sons employ 12 people with some of them being employed for decades showing just how family orientated they are and providing stability amongst the team. You’ll see them getting to locations in one of the eight different maintenance vans they have and are also proudly members of the Master Plumbers Association and have been honoured as life member having been in partnership for over 50 years.
And finally, something that can only be described as remarkable and inspirational; AS Carlson and Sons have been operating for 82 years which is a phenomenal achievement. If you happen to bump into Steve, I highly recommend you ask him about the Carlson family history and its lasting footprint on Whyalla. Congratulations…
