Well, insert that the business is owned by Danny Lynch! A born and bred Whyalla resident that has been an accountant since 2009 before venturing into his own business by 2011. Previous to this he worked as a financial advisor so his many years of experience in the industry has made the team very successful. With Danny you get more than just local knowledge and advice but also an engaging personality that will provide the support any person or businesses need require.

Well folks, this is a tough one. Just how to sum up a short story about a business and local family that are synonymous to Whyalla. It all started in the 1940’ when Great Grandfather Salvadore Azzopardi migrated from Malta. Whilst he was already a qualified butcher, he saw the opportunity to use his skills and cater for the employees at the shipyards which had a tent city full of hungry workers. To make things easier amid the times there was also an abattoir located within the shipyards property which gave the Azzorpardi’ the advantage of dressing their own products.

Moving through the years the business once grew to four different locations but with Woolworths arriving in the 1960’ the company settled in the one shop on Essington Lewis Avenue where they are still located. Not to be persuaded by the competition at the time they created a strong relationship with Whyalla Hospital supplying wholesale for over 40 years.

In 1986 the late Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Whyalla as a part of their Australian tour. As being known for their quality of products the Azzorpardi’ were asked to supply the meat for the Royal’s diner and this gave Brian ‘Chops’ Azzorpardi the opportunity to also be the cook. Chops was so impressive the feedback from the Royal’s and everyone attending resulted in a letter of thanks that is still mounted in the shop. Whilst Chops has now retired, he can still be seen occasionally at the shop so if you happen to see him, don’t forget to ask about his proud family history.

Azzorpardi Butchers are currently celebrating 80 years in business and are also the longest serving member of Master Butchers Limited (MBL) since 1947 and the now owners being the fourth generation in the family. They employ 7 people to keep up with the demands of their customers and are modestly involved in the community being well known for their willingness in sponsoring sporting and community events.

To the current owners and the Azzopardi family; Whyalla says thank you for being committed to a legacy that Grandfather Salvadore established and also for being an Icon in our city.

From the moment we stepped into the Whyalla Caravan and Tourist Park property, it was the realisation of what transformation can provide. Whilst I was going to write this as a good news story; and that is still an element, the real truth here is that hard honest work is the prevailer of what has led to this success.

Stephen and Tanya Edwards and family first arrived in Whyalla around three and a half years ago having purchased the property. Steve tells me that at the start they would get about six caravans a week but it is now highly recommended to make a reservation as they are generally fully booked out year round. There was just the two of them that started the journey but now have a team of eight to help with everything the park requires to keep in its meticulous condition.

The park boasts over 50 different caravan sites, 3 styles of cabins, cottages, units, and for our FiFo friends there’s also workers accommodation. All of this situated in an ambience of native trees and shrubs with an impeccable clean environment. Stepping into the Reception area you’ll be greeted with not only friendly service but an array of everything visitors need to navigate Whyalla and its community.

Other amenities include a camp kitchen for those wishing to mingle amongst other guests and sit around a bonfire during the colder months, a fully capable fish cleaning station for those avid fishers, and very clean laundry and bathroom facilities. But here’s the good news; they’ve recently purchased a further six acres alongside to essentially double the park area.

Steve and Tanya, you really do need to be congratulated on what you have achieved with your vision.

And lastly, whilst Whyalla Caravan and Tourist Park is referred as ‘The Quiet Alternative’, I would like to think it could also be known as the ‘The Loud Achiever’… well done.

Celebrating the March business of the month; it doesn’t surprise us anymore that there really are quality companies here in Whyalla that produce outstanding services. The history of Whyalla Earthworks is one of remarkable. Starting out in 1996, Geoff Brown and Jennifer Hawes created the business in their own names providing a service with one single Tipper. The growth of the business over the years seen some name changes to Whyalla Tipper Hire that was now boasting four machines in their fleet, but it was the creation of Ocean Eyre on our landscape that Geoff and Jennifer seen the potential for further growth. A new excavator was purchased and a change of name to Whyalla Earthworks to reflect the expansion of the fleet’s implements.

Whyalla Earthworks now boasts over thirty different implements such as Excavators, Graders, Skidsteers, Loaders, and Water Trucks. Their services include major earthworks and demolition, and this is provided in all aspects of scale from small and large. A reliable business is supported by continued relationships with ongoing support from companies such as Fulton Hogan, Coates Hire, Onsite Rentals, Enerven, and Whyalla City Council.

They are currently involved in several major projects including the upgrade of the Whyalla Airport, the Cultana East Substation and Transmission Line, Bungama 275kV Connection, and also providing ongoing site services to Liberty Primary Steel, Onsite Rentals and Coates Hire.

But here’s the real thing. What started out as two people starting a business back in 1996, has evolved into a workforce exceeding personnel of twenty-four. All qualified and safety conscious operators working on sites not only in Whyalla but across the whole of Eyre Peninsula.

Geoff and Jennifer have shared their success and provided sponsorships for different community services but mostly being high contributors to motor sports such as the Whyalla Speedway. Looking back on the past nearly three decades in business; Geoff and Jennifer can be proud of what they’ve accomplished and be certain that son Michael is willing to be the next inspiration.

What a way to finish the year of 2024 by congratulating Sumthin Tastee for Business of the Month.

What started out as a dream idea between Rob and Sam North and begun life in a shipping container, Sumthin Tastee is now a recognised café for providing unparalleled food for their customers. Starting approximately seven years ago in the picturesque Whyalla Wetlands, visiting the café has not only gained the reputation for a delicious menu but also the sizeable dishes provided with excellent value for money. Along with this, the experience is enhanced by sitting in the backdrop of manicured lawns and being surrounded by birds and other wildlife that make the wetlands their home. I have personally spoken to Eyre Peninsula residents that advise they always stop at Sumthin Tastee on their way to Adelaide for the great food, service, and location.

Being consistent with the Whyalla business theme, Sumthin Tastee is very much the family business and now proudly employ a team of eleven people. It’s a very busy place at Sumthin Tastee and the team do an excellent job of keeping up the pace for not only visiting diners but also the takeaway and delivery market for those that require that extra service.

They’re open from early morning to later in the evening covering breakfast, lunch, dinner, and also backup their commitment by being open most public holidays.

There’s been significant challenges in Whyalla in recent times and both Rob and Sam recognised that at Christmas time they wanted to help. As a gesture to those not being able to spend Christmas lunch as normal, the team at Sumthin Tastee got together and planned a free lunch. 270 meals were prepared and consumed.

That’s right folks, 270 meals free of charge.
